Holiday Season for the DJ in your life?

Mix Tape Portable DJ Mixer

Now this is a REAL mix tape. This portable DJ Mixer   looks like an old style cassette tape, and it can be used with iPod’s, iPhone’s and MP3 players. You can call it retro or ironic, but the idea of using a cassette tape as a mixer for your MP3 sources is certainly different. Use the cross fader so that you can make a seamless transition. A little portable bling to add to your style.

It fetures a smooth cross fader, and dual 3.5 mm stereo inputs.

Heres the specs.

  • Requires: 2 AAA batteries (not included)
  • Mac and PC compatible
  • 4″w, 2.5″h, .5″d
  • Plastic, electronics

The Mix Tape Portable Dj Mixer is available for $30 from Urban Outfitters.

iSpin for Budding DJs

There is a new way to play DJ. Get your creative juices flowing by mixing and spinning any two MP3 music sources like a DJ! A range of reverb, flange, spin, filter and fade effects are at your fingertips with the new iSpin for iPod. Two universal docking stations fit and charge any iPod model, and the iSpin is also compatible with other MP3 players, notebooks, 3.5mm jack headphones and multimedia speakers with subwoofer. The combo headset/microphone also lets you route your mic either directly or through the effects.

DJ Mouse MP3 mixer makes you the life of the party

Looking for a way to liven up those house parties of yours? Winamp playlist feeling a little passe? iTunes "Genius" feature not really so smart? A company called DJ-Tech has got the answer, and it's the DJ Mouse. What separates an input device for turntablists from one for the unwashed masses, you ask? Is it the "high-definition jog wheel," the one that integrates with the Deckadance software to "let you spin platters intuitively?" Why, yes, it is! But it's also so much more. Don't forget the Scratch button, without which there would be no "direct scratch mode." As the ad says, you too can "become a DJ in one minute, without the science of mixing music." Available for $79 -- but make sure you don't go anywhere before you peep the truly amazing commercial after the break. And take that, Grandmaster Flash!

Pumpkin Pie Martini (serves two) AS Recommended By Southern Protocol!

pumpkin pie martini

Pumpkin Pie Martini (serves two)

Ice
2 ounces vanilla vodka
2 ounces creme de cacao
1/4 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
Whipped cream, for garnish

Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice cubes. Add the vanilla vodka, creme de cacao, heavy cream and pumpkin pie spice and shake well. Dip the rims of two martini glasses into a bowl of whipped cream. Strain the cocktail into the two glasses.

It’s definitely a heavier cocktail – perfect for sitting by the fire or as a special reward for when you finally get up all those Christmas decorations. The combination of chocolate, pumpkin spice and vanilla is a scrumptious one, and how gorgeously cozy does the whipped cream rim look? Cheers!"

Bringing All That Is dev!ous & REAL To The Buzz!!!

devous-1.jpg picture by fettybe

“I just love losing myself in this world I created. I do this because I love it and I express myself through it. I just can't express myself…” ANY OTHER WAY!

 dev!ous

“I'm not what you think, I have a mind of my own.“ This is a statement made by our next feature DJ and I think it truly reflects all that he embodies as an artist and as a person. We are not dealing with a cookie cutter personality here. At a very young age, dev!ous developed deep waters that were stirred by his emotional connection with both music and art. Feeling uncomfortable verbalizing his feelings as a youth, music became a liberating medium for him to connect with others, as well as to interface within social settings. dev!ous has noted that he is a “changeling, a chameleon…who adapts yet never conforms”(http://www.myspace.com/devious805) He knows how to please, yet maintain true to himself in the process. dev!ous was exposed to music at a young age via his parents and this likely helped to shape his emotional interior. I must admit, after having studied and worked with dev!ous, I see a lot of similarities between him and an artist that we featured several months ago…DJ Michael Toast. (http://www.fettybe.com/dj-surveys/2009/3/18/nothing-is-forever-except-changeand-change-is-exactly-what-m.html )

n1071440925_30082464_7416

Both individuals were passionately drawn to music and would spend countless hours in local record shops, unable to satiate the burning desire for the medium that granted them access to their inner beings. As dev!ous evolved in maturity, he found increased pleasure in constantly redefining himself through his musical preferences. He experimented with Freestyle, Breaks, Early Techno, Hip Hop, Heavy Metal, Old-Skool, Jungle, House, Hardcore etc., finally settling comfortably in his electronic music niche! He WILL play all genres, but the electronic genre is closest to his heart.

7319_1234813545080_1071440925_30748577_8195621_n

As with every DJ, he has his story to tell and his sources of inspiration. For dev!ous, the calling was strong and to this day, won’t relinquish it’s hold over his soul. He creates not so that he can be a “rock star” or earn recognition, which we will go into greater depth about in our full length feature…dev!ous creates and plays his music as it is as necessary as breathing to him. He needs music in order to thrive. dev!ous is quite aware of the depth of his relationship with this medium, “Djing has saved my life, I am an addict and I don't want this to stop.“

musicsaves

Not unlike priests, pastors, ministers etc. who are figuratively married to the church, dev!ous appears to have made music is true love….his religion, his essence, his definition. In his Buzz exclusive DJ Survey responses, he makes reference to the desire to travel the world (esp Bangkok) in order to help “spread the faith of music“ (dev!ous Buzz DJ Survey 2009). He of course has endless love for his family, yet music is an entity that holds a supreme place in dev!ous’ life. In further examining the professional and personal progression of dev!ous and his life history, it is obvious how deeply involved his affair with music has grown. He has tasted every flavor of music and prides himself on the ability to customize his sets, as he enjoys experimentation and not following a recipe. This is consistent with his  dev!ous namesake.

l_09238045417eb2c151ccb620d5bd25bd

According to his reflections, he always been slightly left of centre in his mindsets and practices. His loyalty has fallen in being truthful to self, not politics. dev!ous doesn’t walk to a mainstream beat and he is a fascinating study in terms of his purist perspectives with regards to the music industry. Just as the composition of music can range greatly in it’s complexity, when all is said and done, it’s a form of human expression and language. dev!ous has mastered this language devoutly, and is truly committed to spreading the knowledge of music no matter what the platform or venue. Opportunities come in forms that aren’t always predictable and dev!ous is an artist that deliberately chooses to TAKE the path less travelled in order to enrich his life perspectives!  He has MADE opportunities to spin alongside pioneers and greats in the industry. He has immersed himself deeply in all genres of the nightlife scene in order to enrich his personal awareness of the biz and for the basic purpose of trying something new!! dev!ous is passionate about all aspects of his life. When he became a father, his awareness of self evolved even further and gave him more incentive to self-express. He is now passing his enthusiasm and love of music on to his own children…teaching them about all of the equipment, how to mix, about the different types of music and that having an outlet to feel is crucial to self-preservation. dev!ous will always be tied at the hip to music…it courses richly through his veins. No matter where he is in his life, he always swings back to the industry. It is his rock, his foundation. The statement “Once a DJ, always a DJ!” seems to hold very true in the case of our current feature artist dev!ous. He may do it in his OWN WAY, but he is true to his practice. Please be sure to read his very detailed and revealing Buzz exclusive DJ Survey responses ANDDDDD check out his amazing Podcasts, mixtapes and his other portals of networking. Here are a few to get you started!!! He offers it ALL…Hardcore Techno, sweet Chicago House, to poppin’ Hip Hop. dev!ous is a seasoned DJ vet who is knows himself well and carries his history into EVER set that he drops!!

dev!ous Biography

My first love was hip-hop. Soon after my attention was placed on electronic dance music. My first record I bought (when I was 4) was Kraftwerk - Tour De France (Tower records in Torrance, Ca). I still remember the feeling I had buying a import record ( the song from the famous broom scene in Breakin' the movie). I knew at the age of 7 that I wanted to be a Dj when I went to one of my cousin's many weddings and watched how the Dj controlled the crowd. I sat on the speaker and knew that's what I wanted to do.

l_b70794c63eddc4788f0cfe01a72a0cd0

Years went by as I dreamed of one day owning my Dj gear, while getting ready by diggin' in the crates the the local record shops. At the ages of 9-13 you could find me at Paradise Records daily. At the age 13 I moved to Salinas, Ca for a bit then back to Santa Maria then back to Salinas and back to Santa Maria ( I call it SanTha ). During that time I was introduced to a totally different blend of Freestyle, Breaks, Early Techno with a strong Hip-Hop base.Oh, yeah and lots of heavy metal. Totally different than the So.Cal feel. When I moved back in 1993 I was already a techno head. That year I earned enough to purchase 1 1200 and a Gemini Scratchmaster.

DOIN’ IT OLD SKOOL!

With the help of my buddy Matt we teamed up and were DJs. One day Matt needed the dough so he sold his 1200 to me and the rest is history. I fell in love with the whole electronic scene since I first heard Power Pill the Pac-Man track and got the balls to start spinning it in 1995. That same year I hooked up with Nebula Sound Production a.k.a. Master Splinter Sound. They introduced me to the Los Angeles Rave Scene, where we supplied professional concert sound as well as opened for parties and raves with promoters like: F.A.M.I.L.Y., CPU 101, Insomniac, People Who Love You, P.H.P., Double Hit Mickey, Go Ventures and other Top promoters of that time. Since then I have taken a few breaks here and there for personal and for business reasons.

n1071440925_30082457_5810

I thank Djs like Daniel J, Rick Rock, Micheal Anthony, G-Spot, Matthew Grim and Alan Baddmixx Boyd for giving a small town boy a shot at rockin' the inner city crowds. Djing has saved my life, I am an addict and I don't want this to stop. I express myself through music no matter what style I might be playing at the time. Hip-Hop, House, Jungle, Hardcore, Techno, Old-Skool, Breaks or str-8 up club bangers. I rock all types of people. I play for just about any type of event. From high schools to raves to private parties and fund raisers. This is what I do it's a reflection of me in a big way. Currently, I am capable of doing shows of all types for crowds up to 2000 people with my sound system alone.

1.What inspired you to pick your Dj name?

It really isn't my Dj name. It was given to me by teachers in high school so it was my nickname at the age 14 because I asked some extra questions during a sex education class (no joke). I started DJing and then professionally by 14 fully beat mixing at 15 so the name was there already, It's changed a bit from Devius, Devious Dev!ous, D! to Devious 805 but if you hear Devious or Dev!ous you'll know my aggressive sound separates me from any other devious. Plus they probably put DJ at the front of theirs.

2.What kind of music do you spin?

I spin all types of music being a multi-genre DJ and all. My true love is electronic music. What I spin on my free time depends on my mood, but if I'm booked for an event I do what the promoter asks. Usually they ask me to play what I feel and I love when promoters give you an option but I am flexible while still expressing my darker side.

depeche-mode Depeche Mode

3.What and who are your major influences (artist, dj's, etc.)

My parents are the most important musical influence on me to date. I grew up with a back round sound track of funk, classic rock, Latin and Disco sounds. It was easy to start DJ'n after getting my equipment because a lot of records were there for the taking from my Dad's crates (he had a pretty dope collection from his college days). My musical influences have to include: Planet Patrol, Egyptian Lover, Dr. Dre, 2 Live Crew, N.W.A. Earth Wind & Fire, Santana, Bob Marley, Ice T, Marvin Gaye, Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies, Rage Against The Machine, Kraftwerk, Aphex Twins, The Cure, Morrissey, Depeche Mode, Public Enemy
Major house music influences include: Dj Traxx, Justin Long, Terry Mullen, Berry Weaver, Stevie Loria, Doc Martin, Jason Blakemore, Dj Baddmixx, Halo, Green Velvet, Bassment Jaxx and so many more

4.Biggest reward about being a DJ?

Being able to share my vibe and connect with people without letting the words get in the way, the fringe benefits ain't bad either.

5.Biggest pet peeve about being a DJ?

The DJ GUY the trendy ass color coordinating Dj shoe wearing DJ hat having label placing hipster dude that talks more about why people should dig his style than actually playing his style & the DJ GIRL like OH MY GOD!!! It's a girl DJ? Like if their ears or hands or sense of rhythm is different that ours. Shit I remember my Mom had the BEST ears and could hear well, when necessary. I hate the trendy people, I've been in this DJ lifestyle since 1993 so understand I get upset at these kids that don't know the real meaning of PLUR. No, it's not a type of pill.

rave RAVES

6.What is the best party you have ever spun at?

The now Legendary Opium 2 back in 1995. I say that because for those that experienced this we now know it will never be that way again. It was a rave at a Malibu Fun Center in Redondo Beach, Ca (a miniature golf & go cart park) They closed the place down and Nebula Sound Production was doing the sound and they allowed me to do the opening set of some acid house and Techno. The set up was amazing as they set the progressive house & trance area in the golf part over looking the fountain area with lots of props making it a Alice in Wonderland feel. The batting cage area on the other side of the park was set up for the Techno and Hardcore area giving it post war Martial Law look as the wall of speakers was placed behind the large chain gate fence topped with barbed wire. Later through the madness the gate broke and the wall of speakers nearly toppled over. Providing the best atmosphere for the first appearance for Delta 9 and Dj Tron (R.I.P.) on his 2nd time rocking Los Angeles. Jason Blakemore threw down some ill breaks and it was something at such a important time for the Los Angeles rave scene that I will never ever forget. It was only 1500 of us but it was the largest there was at that time.

BANGKOK NIGHTLIFE!

7.If you could mix at a club or party anywhere, where would it be and with whom?

I would love to travel the world and spread the faith of music but if I had the chance I'd really love to spin in Japan. The people and lifestyle really intrigue me. Bangkok would also be a great place to play. It really wouldn't matter who I was with as long as they love to have a good time just like me. Lately I've been noticing quite a lot of downloads on my podcast from Bangkok so my fingers are crossed but I sure would like to go out there soon.

8.In what cities have you spun? Are you a resident DJ at any clubs right now?

Let's see: Houston,TX Ensenada, Mexico, T.J. Mexico, Gary Indiana, Chicago, Kansas City Mo, Topeka Ks, Phoenix Madison WI, Honolulu Hi, Oakland CA, San Jose, CA Monterrey CA, Salinas, CA Los Angeles, CA Inland Emipre, CA Orange County, CA San Diego, CA Santa Barbara and all over the Central Coast of California. My first residency was at the age 16 and by 17 I had 2 nights at a local disco tech (I had to be escorted by security from the dj booth to the bathroom) Once holding down 7 residencies in a week in Honolulu now a days I spin at raves, undergrounds and promoting EDM one off parties. Currently looking to change all that by changing up my style up a bit and start wearing skinny jean, expensive ugly Nike's & a Fedora with RayBan's that I wore when I was 10. HA come'on Fetty Be you M.E.

Avalon Avalon in Los Angeles

9.What is the hottest club you have ever been to either as a DJ or a patron?

hard to say I've always been a Rave guy, the underground is where my heart is, I've been to many clubs but I have to say they just aren't the same. I dance with speakers. But it's all about the sound system for me so I'm gonna have to say Avalon in Los Angeles.

clubbing090

10.Do you plan out your sets or do you play to the crowd's reactions?

I never plan out my sets, there may be a few records that get mixed because they are just perfectly on key but I always play for the crowd and am always experimenting and keeping it fresh. I just don't like playing premade playlists and even if I try I never stick to it, that's just me I guess

11.If you could design a club, name three important aspects of it's layout.

1. sound system is the most important party of the club, the DJ is only as good as the sound system provided
2. bar or bars it is very important where they are located and what is visible from there for patrons.
3. Entrance: a first impression goes a long way and if a person enters with a smile they are more likey to pass on that smile through the club almost contagiously. It just sucks getting a bad vibes from muscle head bouncer and security just because they can. Those are my important aspects, simple yet vital.

I-love-techno-2

12.Techno/Trance or Mash-Up/Hip-Hop?

Even thought Hip-Hop is my first love, ever since I first hear TECHNO I've been addicted. I do play Trance it's just not my strongest genre. I play Mash-Ups when I do mobile gigs and weddings but I'll always play true Hip-Hop. It's this bullshit rap with them dances that match, I just can't go for that, No can do no.

13.East Coast or West Coast?

Haven't been out there but I sure am ready

4917_1158402314847_1071440925_30478404_6802726_n

14.MAC or PC?

For now PC but when all my ducks are in a row I will use MAC for Serato and PC for production.

15.Top favorite 3 tracks of all time?

Flowerz - Armand Van Helden
Tour De France- Kraftwerk
Born Slippy - Underworld

Cornerstone Mixtape #121 "Behind The Scene" hosted by Nessa (KYLD Wild 94.9FM)

"As many of you may know, over the past few months we've tragically lost some great DJs. Rest in Peace to the great Super Rockin' Mr. Magic, Grandmaster Roc Raida and DJ AM. We humbly approached a veteran 1200 Squad DJ, that in addition to knowing AM well, also possessed the skill set necessary to pay homage to these Mixers through a mixture of good hip-hop and other sounds that'll make you move.

We welcome back DJ Scene to Cornerstone Mixtape #121 with the "Behind The Scene" Mixtape! We're also bringing on board a young lady that is making moves with Scene on the airwaves out of the Bay. We welcome Nessa (who can be heard on KYLD, Wild 94.9 running the night shows with J.Espinosa as well as Scene). Be on the lookout for Nessa, as this hungry yet humble individual, is the epitome of a 1200 Squad DJ: hard work, dedication and relentless grind on and off the radio.

Make sure you play this mixtape loud and proud with music from Nutso, Dyme Def, Kam Moye aka Supastition, Wale, Nipsey Hussle and more! Be sure to get moving with the radio playables that we call the Music Meeting. Don't be late with materials from Sean Price & Buckshot (inspired by Black Dynamite), LL Cool J, Mike Bless, Diddy & Dirty Money, Shonie and Snoop Dogg!

One more to go people as this year is almost at a close. Please enjoy yourselves and be safe as you prepare for the coming holiday seasons. Never forget, "The DJ Is The Cornerstone of Hip-Hop®" "
