2009 SAN DIEGO CABO SAN LUCAS GROOVE CRUISE RECAP!

“Music is a gift”!!! bellows the amazing House music artist/DJ/producer Donald Glaude from behind the decks with arms elevated, in the Carnival Elation cruise ship’s Jekyll & Hyde dance club! I feel like I’m in the “church” of Glaude, as the moment is so incredibly moving to the point that it’s borderline spiritual!!!

DSC_7275

The House music congregation is gathered faithfully before the “pastor of the decks” & as the ceremony unfolds with trax after trax of cutting edge sheer brilliance & mixing. The synergy is unifying! There are SO many experiences like this available to the music lover aboard a Groove Cruise and after having wrapped up our second GC, it’s definitely a truth we plan to “preach” about this unique bi-annual House happening within the club music industry.

Well into it’s 5th year of existence, this GROOVE CRUISE brainchild of Whet Travel Owner & Operator Jason Beukema & 4THEDJ Operator Matt Martinez, has been one of the most delicious, exclusive parties offered on BOTH coastlines!

DSC_7189Matt Martinez – 4TheDJ – CoFounder of the Groove Cruise

It’s truly been one of the best kept secrets of the House music industry and yet, as we all know, secrets DO eventually leak. Key players within the industry have picked up wind of this incredible House music event & are eagerly signing up to say that they have been a  part of the magic that happens out on the high seas!!

This includes everyone from DJs, promoters, fashion icons, professional partiers, A-listers etc! To a certain extent, there is somewhat of a micro-WMC feel to the Groove Cruise. However, what truly sets this unique party apart is the fact that you have the opportunity to bond with your fellow party-goers over the course of 3-7 days, depending on the cruise length. Veteran Groove Cruisers return, like ourselves & many others, because the experience is so incredibly uplifting on more than just a musical level. The parties ARE intense, but you set your own pace & do as much or as little as you choose! It's COMPLETE CUSTOMIZED PARTYING!

Our first Groove Cruise out of LA in 08 was definitely a learning experience & this year we came better prepared ( http://www.fettybe.com/home/2008/7/31/the-groove-cruise-experience-brings-a-whole-new-meaning-to-t.html). We were armed with information & expectations as to what would occur over the duration of the cruise. We knew that the dynamics would alter slightly due to the chemistry between the participants & DJs. The weather turned out to play a greater influence in this years cruise. In the past, the LA Groove Cruise has traditionally been held in July. This year it was deferred until October, as the Royal Caribbean had stopped that run & Beukema was able to secure 1 extra day on a trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. It was ideal on paper, but perhaps cruising in October might be rethought? It really is a risky time to travel in terms of storms, earthquakes & tsunamis. Yes, despite the less than desirable weather, the purpose of the trip wasn’t for weather but rather for hearing the music & networking with the industry participants. The crazy weather & rolling seas actually made the dancing a lot of fun! Buster, from A3TV, coined it beautifully as a, “NEW FORM OF ELECTRONIC LINE DANCING”!!, while filming up on the Lido Deck!

DSC_7540 THE HOST BUSTER…FROM A3TV!

As the ship gently leaned to the right, the whole dance floor responded by moving as one to the right and then as the ship gently righted itself, the whole dance floor responded by flowing back towards the left!! Everyone had their arms elevated & moved in unison while laughing & calling out “WHOAAAA”!

Groove Cruise San Diego To Cabo San Lucas in San Diego

It was a blast and occured quite a bit during this GC. Most of the participants weren’t bothered at all by the rough waters & rolled with it. Sometimes attitude is half the battle!! All of the gigs proceeded as planned. Even the outdoor poolside events occurred, despite some warm rains & wind. Only one afternoon saw the whole group moved indoors to the Jekyll & Hyde Dance Club. Jason, Matt, Kathy, Tiny & Buster took it all in stride. Fetty Be even gave Jason a screen t-shirt to help keep him motivated throughout the cruise! It said, “Every little thing is gonna be alright!!” with a picture of three birdies chirping happily away! And that…. is how it rolled!!!

DSC_7470 Jason Beukema

“Five years ago, "Jason Beukema, a tour manager at a travel agency in Atlanta, thought he was just doing his friends a favor in organizing a group vacation. Little did he know that the music-themed cruise he created would blossom into a full-fledged business. What started as a few close buddies grew into 125 friends (now 300-500) and acquaintances boarding what he called the Groove Cruise in October 2004. “All of a sudden people who’d heard about it from their friends just started calling me, wanting to find out about the cruise,” said Mr. Beukema, who started Whet Travel after returning to Atlanta from the first voyage. “We didn’t spend a dime on advertising. It was all word of mouth.” ( "The Groove Cruise...a Dance Party Niche in the Cruise Industry" http://www.whettravel.com/) “ The Groove Cruise certainly appears to have become a far more complex organization since it’s humble beginnings & the innovation of Jason Beukema has truly kept this unique party evolving in it’s definition. Just recently Jason was awarded ASTA’S Young Professional of The Year!! http://www.asta.org/News/PRdetail.cfm?ItemNumber=5834&navItemNumber=539  As the Groove Cruise faces the beginning of it’s 6th season, new promotions are already underway to create fun & excitement for returning clients & new cruisers!! In particular a saucy 4some promotion for the ladies!!

In order to elevate the profile of the venue within the DJ community, Webceleb was brought on board to help host a DJ competition, “Who’s Spinning On Deck 10?”. Mass numbers of DJ’s stepped up to the plate to compete for a much sought after spot to spin on board the Cabo Groove Cruise and in the line-up of globally respected DJs such as: Sharam, Bad Boy Bill, Scotty Boy, Donald Glaude, DJ Frances, Scooter & Lavelle, Anthony Attalla, DJ Deone, Jaime Navaraez, Kevin Brown, Torin, and J-Sin to name just a few!! This was a great way to reach mass numbers of artists as each DJ encouraged their followers to vote for them in the competition, thus promoting the Groove Cruise! We enjoyed meeting the winner of this year’s competition Rocke and hearing him spin! He put forth great soul & kept true to the Groove Cruise vibe & hype in his delivery! We haven’t received a confirmation yet, but it seems likely that this competition may occur again, as it had SUCH overwhelming response in it’s inaugural launch.

DSC_7204 ROCKE! The 2009 Winner of the “Who’s Spinning On Deck 10” Webceleb Contest!

The Cabo San Lucas Groove Cruise 2009 was truly another smash hit. People rallied in the face of economic hardships to unite under the umbrella of House music & to prove that spirits will not be broken. Hawt new club anthems were dropped with the intentions of gauging reactions from this House music savvy crowd. Scotty Boy gave us all a sneak peek of his new original trax “4 Am In Vegas” due out in a few weeks on Beatport and Donald also dropped some brand new material for fun!!

DSC_7383

The ladies were incredibly hawt in skimpy clad bikini’s on Nikki Beach and the men were strutting a new array of tattoos for all to admire! The costumes were as outlandish as in the previous year, and although we weren’t blessed with a cow on the dance floor, we were buzzed by the presence of a bumble bee!! It was the perfect mascot to represent Fetty Be’s Buzz and pics were definitely taken!  Afros, feather boas, silky v-neck disco shirts, bell-bottom pants, platforms, WIGS, sailors, Elvis Presley shades, thigh high boots, fish net stockings, blow-up dolls, flashing neon light props WERE ALL spotted on this years Groove Cruise!

DSC_7255

To truly appreciate a Groove Cruise, you must experience it first hand. We were even told that there is quite a difference between the Miami and San Diego Groove Cruises. According to multiple testimonies of returning GC vets, the chemistry and dynamics vary according to the coast. The Miami Cruise tends to be a larger group of participants (500+), whereas the San Diego Cruise is usually more intimate (150-300). The cultural diversity is also a factor in the cruise dynamics….Yet, we have yet to do a Miami Groove Cruise, so that will have to remain a reported speculation until we can determine that fact for ourselves!

I'M A GROOVE CRUISER FOR LIFE! The quality people you meet on the Groove Cruise is amazing. I have met many friends that I will be friends for life. I went on one cruise prior to the Groove Cruise, and between the bad music and boring people I thought I'd never go on a cruise again, boy has that changed now!! The people, the music, the dancing all make it so you don't even want to get off the boat!

The Groove Cruise is an amazing experience. Take an already fun cruise and add in great people, DJs, and excitement to take your vacation to another level. Perfect for those looking to vacation and party with like minded, music loving people!

There is something about being isolated from the "real world" and surrounding yourself with other people who love dance music as much as you do. You are all there for a common purpose--your passion for music, and because of that, you can relate to everyone.  I know I am always commenting on how lost I feel in life, but for 3 days I’m able to forget about that and just be at peace, cruising with new friends in the middle of the ocean on one huge music festival.

Frickin' fantastic. A lot of my friends aren't into dance music, so it was really nice to hang out with people who understand what I'm talking about when I walk in and say, "Tiesto." The Groove Cruise was a week-end party full of fun people, good music, and great experiences. I missed some meals, a lot of sleep, and loved every second of it.

It was absolutely awesome! Atmosphere and music was great, the people that I met has to be the best part of the cruise to me. You can dance and party anywhere, but to do it with people who all share the same passion of music and dancing is a whole different experience itself. You also get to meet life long friends.

Alright people, now that I've come out of my 2 week coma from this crazy trip I think I can respond. I seriously don't even know where to begin. This cruise was by far the best vacation I have ever been on. Mostly because of all the crazy fockers!! Seriously, I never expected to have that much fun and to have met such awesome people. I felt like I had known all of you for years. All of us got along so well. Like one big happy family , I am still reminiscing in my head about all the events that took place and I find myself smiling or laughing every time. Pure entertainment, pure fun. Just when you thought you had a great day or laughed your hardest, it was topped by something else. I had the best time of my life with all ya'll. To those of you that I've seen and rocked out with since the cruise...it's been fun. Hope to keep in contact with everyone and get together for more events. J.Beuks...thank you sooooooo much for putting together the GROOVE CRUISE and for bringing such cool people together. You're the best!! Much love to everyone!!!

In November I went on a cruise that was the single BEST vacation that I have ever been on. Those of you who know me, know that I travel at last 10 times in a year to places like Chicago, New York, Florida, Vegas, Colorado, Mexico, Puerto Rico, etc.! All in search of a party! I can tell you that I have never experience a trip like this one!!  We had a HUGE crew and took over the boat and every destination we went to. Long story short, this trip is a yearly trip and one that YOU MUST experience.
Rich Arenas

Cheers to you all! I have to say what an experience myself...not knowing a soul getting on the boat and leaving like we are long time friends...I couldn't keep up with you guys! Guess I'll just have to work on that tolerance by next year.

Words can't describe the awesome time we had.... you'll just have to look at the pictures!

Hey all…just wanted to say thanks to everyone for assisting me in the best time of my life. Amazing! I could never understand how those people on reality shows got so close in a couple weeks, but look at all of us, in just a few days we became a giant "family" We all keep in contact, and plan to go see each other through next year up until the next cruise.

I've talked to few of you since I got back from DJ-ing in Paris and we all agreed that the best part of this trip was the music (haha). Just kidding, it was the fact that we all got along like we knew each other for years. My DJ schedule is a little crazy but I promise I will do my best to hook up with all you guys before the next cruise.
